Change is in the Air

So much going on ‘out there’. I feel like everything is ‘out there’ in this pandemic. I am not sure what that implies other than this is where I feel safest these days – in my little two-bedroom house tucked away in the foothills.

Yesterday was our first full-grocery shopping day. We have been using the pick-up service since the pandemic started. I became less attentive to what I ordered, for example the 64 ounce can of mixed nuts I ordered thinking I was ordering 12 ounces. That container was the size of a coffee can! And it had peanuts in it which I cannot eat, so hubby must eat them.

All day I was sneezing and had a runny nose. I was sure I was getting sick. And getting sick these days always makes you think – Is it the virus? So, to combat the possibility, I decided to try some of the zinc lozenges I purchased just for the occasion. They were so bad I had to throw it in the trash, but not before it had sucked every morsel of moisture from my mouth and throat. When we sat down for dinner, I could not taste my food. 😳 I panicked for a moment, but it was the lozenge!

This morning I woke early while hubby slept in a bit. It was a delightful 60° F. I put the bird feeders out with the exception of the hummingbird feeder. I saw a dead bug floating inside. I proceeded to open it and pour the contents out and lo and behold there were two yellow jackets inside the feeder and they were very much alive! Sadly, I disposed of them because I could see no clear way to ‘rescue’ two angry yellow jackets.

I have come to the conclusion that none of the WordPress editor options work well with a touch screen device. The screen jumps around causing me to save the draft, exit and then edit a post. I am sure something triggers the behavior but it is beyond me.

Map of Atlantic tropical disturbancesOur weather tomorrow will be rainy, with a predicted 3+ inches of rain 🌧 as the remainder of Hurricane Sally passes through. Conditions could improve or worsen depending on the track of the storm as it moves inland. It is extremely active out in the Atlantic right now. Fortunately, most of the storms do not seem to be an ultimate threat to the continental US.

It is definitely feeling like fall is on the way. We pulled up most of our summer vegetables with the exception of our pepper plants which continue to produce a lot of peppers. Tonight I am attempting to make stuffed Italian peppers so we shall see how that turns out!

  1. Stay safe where you are! Our pepper plants (jalapeno) are still producing loads too, and our tomatoes are flowering but not producing at all. I guess we planted too late. I too feel the change is coming even though we are still very warm here in Texas. Mornings are cool and afternoons are in the mid 80’s. Next week it won’t be so humid, so that will be more pleasant.
PS-I’m glad you didn’t get stung!!

  2. An early day outside for me. Annie was happy to play. It is supposed to be 97 here today and I have no desire to be out in the heat. I am not a fan of yellow jackets either.
Sadly, all the smoke and ash has meant very few birds and no bees in my garden. I miss them both.

    1. I remember the smoke and ash from fires in Florida and here in the mountains. It makes it so hard to breathe. I pray the fires will be extinguished soon. So much devastation!

  3. 64 ounces is 4 pounds! Just a little off there… I’m not allergic to peanuts, but they’re not nuts, and I wish they wouldn’t include them in a can of mixed nuts.

We have the windows open here. It’s great, in fact maybe a little chilly.

    1. I know, John! The problem with shopping apps is you click on photos, but forget to read the fine details. It is great when we can let the fresh air in

    1. Right now it looks to be raining all day. We have had just over an inch since midnight with the promise of at least two more throughout the day. So far no wind at all.

  4. Hope your sneezing has abated! The ragweed is huge this year and both of us are responding to it at the moment. Sigh. Stuffed peppers sound delightful! And isn’t the cool air a welcome change?

    1. The sneezing has subsided. I did see our pollen counts were very high. The stuffed peppers were so tasty – what a nice change. And yes, the cool air is bliss!

  5. It is definitely autumn here now with the summer flowers fading. I’ve used up the last of the rhubarb but have an awful lot of cooking apples to deal with – and everyone else seems to have plenty of their own 🙂

    1. Oh, Mary, I would love a nice rhubarb pie. When I have extra apples, I like to cook a few to have with breakfast. I love warm cooked apples.

  6. I ended up with the most enormous bottle of Pine Sol that has ever graced our pantry. Proves I should never order from Costco! It is in the 40’s at night now and the flannel nightgown has replaced my cotton shift.

    1. Elizabeth, we are just starting to dip into the 50’s at night. No flannel here yet. I know what you mean about Costco. I have a gallon of hand sanitizer now.

  7. Glad to hear the worst of the storm didn’t get up to you. We have had the last of the hot days before it cools down to 19 C this weekend.
    Best wishes, Pete.
