If you have never been on the Blue Ridge Parkway in autumn, I encourage you to add it to your bucket list.
We decided to take our first drive up on the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday to check out the fall color. We only went up once last year, but it was a very foggy day.
If I told you it was all smooth sailing, I would be lying. Our normal drive of about 50 minutes was well over two hours due to accidents on the highway. Then we were stopped due to a huge bridge beam blocking the highway in both directions. We finally made it onto the parkway.
Our first stop was at the Folk Art Center. A few weeks ago a couple were injured when a bear surprised them while they were picnicking on the grounds. We decided to drive on up to Craggy Gardens where we saw a little more color.
Even if we were a little early to see the fall color, we were still refreshed from the drive. The mountains and the scenery never disappoint. There was a reasonable amount of traffic and most of the scenic overlooks were full of cars. Last week a woman went over the edge at the Haw Creek Overlook in her car. Thankfully she was ok.
We decided to eat lunch at the Craggy Gardens picnic area. There are plenty of picnic tables, but we just dropped the tailgate on the truck and ate our lunch right there in the parking lot.
It was a longer day than we had planned because the highway traffic was heavy all day, but that does not discourage us from going back next week when the colors of autumn should be a little further south.
