#WATWB Comes to an End

Welcome back to the final monthly bloghop – We Are The World Blogfest. The last Friday of each month has been dedicated to shining a light on the good news throughout our world. It is something we all have needed in these past few years. My hat is off to those who so faithfully carried the mission forward, spreading light into the darkness. Even though this effort comes to a close today, let us continue to carry on, sharing an equal amount of good and positive news whenever we can.

I will admit to filtering my news feed to limit the amount of horrible news I read coming out of Ukraine, but there are so many stories of humanity that must not be overlooked.

The first story is one of Polish mothers leaving strollers at the train station for fleeing Ukranian mothers with their children. You can read the entire story here.

The second story is of a Ukranian mother who stopped to play one final Chopin piece on her piano in the ruins of her bombed out house. It is hard to watch the video because it shows the damage, but also shows the beauty in the resilience of the human spirit. You can watch the video here.

And last, the story of a woman who took a Ukranian father’s children across the border when he could not leave the country. This woman had to leave her own adult children in Ukraine because of their professions but took a stranger’s children to safety and into their mother’s arms in Hungary. Plastic is too prevalent in our society and we need more incentives to recycle. Bali, like many other locations that rely on tourism, suffered during the pandemic. Pollution from plastic increased and money to buy food decreased. But imagine what would happen if collected plastic waste was used as currency with which food could be purchased?

Clean Water News – #WATWB

Clean water is a resource so many of us take for granted but yet is a threatened life-sustaining resource at risk for 1.42 billion people across the world who live in areas of clean water vulnerability. Since fresh water accounts for less than 3% of the water on our planet, fresh water is becoming more and more scarce.

At the University of South Australia, Associate Professor Haolan Xu led a team of researchers in the development of a device that uses solar evaporation to derive fresh water from sea water, brackish water or contaminated water.

This inexpensive device from easily sourced materials holds the potential for providing enough daily fresh drinking water for a family of four from one square meter of source water.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff – #WATWB

There are many electronic devices these days and more and more wearable devices. The impact of the batteries required to charge those devices is another one of those dirty little secrets many people are either ignorant of or choose to ignore in favor of the convenience of the technology.

Both the manufacture and the disposal of these batteries are neither sustainable nor are they good for the environment.

There is good news on the horizon, however. Engineers from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have developed a tiny bandage thin battery that is charged off of ‘sweat’. This battery can discharge 20 hours of electricity from 2 ml of perspiration.

During testing, a volunteer was able to generate a voltage of 4.2 V and an output power of 3.9 mW. That’s impressive. Imagine a battery powered by perspiration rather than one damaged by perspiration.

An Unexpected Friendship – #WATWB

Building bridges and establishing relationships has been difficult this last year as we all experienced isolation due to the pandemic. It has been particularly hard on young children and the elderly, both of which can be very vulnerable members of our society.

Two-year old Benjamin Olsen found a new best friend in his slightly older next door neighbor, Mary O’Neill. Mary will be 100 in December. It is that age difference that makes this friendship so unexpected and so endearing.
