Rainy Days

Day 22

I don’t mind the rain. Especially the long steady moderate rain like we had overnight. I slept so well and honestly it was one of those mornings I could have stayed curled up in my blankets for hours. But, I had promised hubby we would go to the movies today and he was looking forward to it.

This rain was again courtesy of another hurricane. Hurricane Willa made landfall in Mexico and has left a large swath of rain in its wake. It is destined to transform into the first nor’easter of the season. Hopefully, people will be spared any further damage from this storm.

A Star is Born

IMG_7274We decided to go to an early matinee of “A Star is Born” with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. I was also excited because I have always loved Sam Elliott so this was a little cherry on top for me.

We drove up to Asheville to see the movie. We were thinking there would be very few people at the theatre at 12:30 pm on a Friday afternoon but I sometimes forget how many retirees live in and around Asheville.

Movie Pet Peeves

Let’s just go ahead and get my pet peeves out of the way, shall we?

  • Cost. Even paying senior prices, the tickets were $16. Then we shared a popcorn and a bottle of water which cost another $15.
  • Choosing Seats. I am not sure what started this trend but we had to select our seats when we bought the tickets. What is odd is that the theatre was no where near booked like we were led to believe.
  • Volume. The previews are the worst, but even most movies are just too loud for me. I would like to keep as much of my hearing as possible.

The Good Stuff

IMG_7278This was our first time at this theatre. We were surprised to see recliners with leatherette seats, built in cup holders and electric seat controls. If you so desired, you could lie down to watch the entire movie.

The movie was wonderful. Parts were way too loud for me but I wrote this off as part of the movie. All the actors were wonderful. Lady Gaga was amazing and brought me to tears several times.

It was a perfect way to spend a rainy day. Most of the rain has stopped now and there is a chill in the air. We only reached 46 degrees F today, so it feels very fall-like.

Coming Attractions

There were a few movies I am anxious to see. Mary Poppins Returns and “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” look good, but I  am on the fence about “Vice” and “The Mule”.

I am intrigued by “Rocketman”, the story of Elton John but first I need to figure out what the heck a fantasy-musical genre is. If it is truly his life story, I might like to see it.

All in all it was a good rainy day. This weekend is my silver jewelry workshop with Molly Sharp and I am really looking forward to it. I will see you back here tomorrow evening.

  1. Was this the Carolina Theater, Maggie? I’ve only been there once, but it’s definitely not like movie theaters in the past. Way more posh!

We were glad of the rain, too — we still need it. I find rain a bit gloomy, but I need to get over that….

    1. No, Lisa. We went to the Regal cinema in Biltmore Park Town Square. Popped into Barnes and Nobel for a coffee after the show. ❤️

      1. We were just down at Biltmore Square buying winter boots at REI today. We’re trying to get prepared for our winter experience in Quebec…

  2. Gracious! I am so shocked by the price I don’t know what to say. I seldom go out to the movies but when I do, with Noni, or Rachel, once in awhile, we go on Tuesdays to the cheap show. The tickets are $5. And the seats are comfortable with cup holders but not so fancy like yours. I love previews, I always have, but most of the movies these days being previewed I can’t hardly relate to. Last time Noni and I went to the movie it was to see Book Club with Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, etc. We loved it. Again we went to the cheap show for $5. Do they not have cheap show days in Asheville? 2 or 3 theatres have them here, and a couple of them are nice fancy theatres but they are not as close as this one. Anyway I loved the movie, thought it was awesome, even though I was dubious going because I loved the version with Barbra Streisand in the 70’s, but Lady Gaga was just amazing and, as I’ve said, I have a crush on Bradley Cooper, so there’s that… 🙂

    1. I have not found a theatre with cheap days yet, but then we do not go often. They just remodeled the little theatre in our town so we may go there more often now that it is open again. I always swoon over Sam so I will leave Bradley for you! 😁

      1. The Fine Arts Theater in Asheville has $5 days for “seniors” on Tuesdays. My hubbie loves going then!

      2. Well Sam is certainly swoon worthy too! I watched an interview with the two of them on youtube and Sam laughed talking about when he met with Bradley for the first time about the movie. Bradley had been working with a voice coach for months to sound like Sam with his deep voice and it shocked Sam who said Bradley sounded just like him. I noticed the similarity in the movie too. They are both really dishy! 😀

  3. I can’t go to theaters because of my fragrance allergies. I don’t really want to be evacuated via ambulance because of someone’s cologne. (sort of lol) Crowds and loud noises are not my friends either. That being said I patiently wait for things to come out in DVD or on the tele. With the cost of movies here at 14$ or more I figure the 15$ or 17& I pay for a DVD is worth it. My popcorn is less costly at home, my beverages are less costly at home, and I can visit the loo at my discretion.
You and others have definitely made this a movie I shall seek out. I would not have without your wonderful review. Glad you had a good outing.

    1. I should have added one of my other pet peeves as the fragrance thing. Just as the movie was starting, the woman next to me decided it was time to apply some fragranced hand lotion. I was eating popcorn and it totally changed the taste of the popcorn. Luckily it dissipated rather quickly but I was not a happy camper.
