SoCS – It’s Cold in Here

It’s Saturday morning and time for SoCS again hosted, as always, by the lovely Linda Hill.

If you want to join in, head over to Linda’s and get the scoop on the rules. Here’s the subject for the day.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “back of the fridge.” Write the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the phrase “back of the fridge.” Enjoy!

I live in an old piece of Tupperware. You know, those plastic storage containers your grandmother and mother used to buy? That’s it! The place I call home. It’s painted a beautiful daffodil yellow and my roof has this cool texture, like a sunburst. It’s pretty safe in here — after all we got burped before we were gently placed in pride of place on the top shelf, front and center.

It didn’t take long before some newbies came in and started pushing their weight around. Some roast beef and mashed potatoes. Just who do they think they are?

A few days passed and the roast beef and potatoes were moved down a shelf. I don’t feel bad. They had it coming. But today! Whoah. A big glass casserole dish filled with a cheesy lasagne pushed us way back to the back of the fridge. The whole place reeks of garlic now, like an old cafe on a rundown side street in Italy. Whew!

Another full day went by. I am feeling like we’ve been forgotten now. I’m growing a fuzzy little beard despite the really cool temperatures. Is it air I need or do I have too much air? I’m sure that crack in the roof isn’t helping any.

Oh, no! Incoming! The beef stew pushed us as far back in the corner as we can get. All I see now is an old box of baking soda that no longer serves any purpose.

Three weeks have passed. I am completely covered now with a furry blanket of green. It has somehow attached itself to the walls and the roof. Wait, I can see a crack of light. Containers are being moved. Finally, they’ve come for me!

“What in the world is this?”

“Hard to say. Open it and see.”

“Oh, gross! THIS IS NASTY! I can’t even tell what it was. And it stinks!”

“Just dump it out and put the Tupperware in the dishwasher.”

“Ewwww, no! I’m not touching that. It’s going in the garbage. Mom will never miss this old Tupperware. Look!  The lid is cracked.”

Whoosh. “Two points!”

*********

Boy it sure is dark in here. And it stinks. What’s that? An old banana peel?

SoCS – Baby, It’s Cold Inside

Stream of Consciousness Saturday is brought to you every week by Linda Hill. Check out her blog for the rules and the contribution of other bloggers.

This week’s prompt:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “the last thing you put in your fridge.” Start your post with the last thing you put in your fridge. Let your mind wander from there. Enjoy!

It is dangerous for me to write before I have had my coffee, but maybe it is not too risky to write while I drink my coffee. And that, my friends, brings us to the prompt.

The last thing I put in the refrigerator was the creamer for my coffee. I love my morning coffee, but I am not a real coffee aficionado. Not like I imagine my ancestors and pioneers were. You know, when you might boil coffee in a blue swirl enamel coffee pot over a campfire – strong and hot and bitter. I think all my grandparents drank their coffee black.

No. Me, I’m a lightweight coffee drinker. Decaf coffee, Sugar In the Raw, and fat free cream! My ancestors would laugh me out of the family. But there are reasons that seem very logical to me for all of it. I blame some of it on my doctor. He suggests little or no caffeine and to lower the fat I consume in dairy products (that’s where most of the bad saturated fat lives). The sugar I will own because I like my coffee sweet, but I don’t like to use chemical sweeteners. Now I know sugar is bad, too, but it is part of this warm morning drug I partake in.

Yesterday I went out fairly early to pick up a few things I needed from the store. I stopped on the way back trying to find fat-free cream since we were running low. I could not find it anywhere and soon decided the risk of being out far outweighed the risk of drinking regular cream. I did manage to find low-fat cream, though. When I picked it up to what did my wandering eyes appear? Peppermint Mocha creamer! I checked the label. No saturated fat. (I was in a weakened state so I will admit to ignoring the chemical content of said creamer.) I popped it in my basket along with one carton of low-fat cream and headed home.

Once home, I told hubby I was making me a coffee – a Peppermint Mocha coffee – since I had only had one cup that morning. The temptation was too great for him. Peppermint Mocha is his favorite holiday coffee. He joined me.

Upon waking this morning I asked, “Well, are you?”

He knew exactly what I was asking.

“Not until the second cup.”
