A Blogging Survey If You Please

An image made up of question marks

I have been thinking about the blogging practice of other bloggers. It seems some people must spend a lot more time here than I do, so my curiosity is piqued. If you have time, please respond to the unofficial questions below.

1. How many times per week do you post? Do you post multiple times a day? If so, how many?

2. How many blogs do you follow?

3. Do you read all the blogs you follow every day? If not, how often do you read other blogs?

4. Do you seek out new blogs to follow?  If so, how do you find them?

5. Do you comment on the blogs you read? If not, why? Do you respond to all the comments left on your blog?

6. Do you ever close comments on a blog you post? If so, why?

7. Do you ever unfollow someone? If so, why?

8. What content inspires you to follow a blogger?

9. What content turns you off from following someone?

10. How important is it to you that you add a photo to every post?

11. Leave me a link for one blogger (other than yourself) that you think I should check out.

You can either write a post and link back here so I can read your responses, more leave them in the comments. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

  1. Here are my answers, Maggie.
    1) Every day, 2-4 times a day.
    2) 100. I set that as a limit.
    3) Yes, without fail, unless I am unwell. (They don’t all post every day)
    4) I follow people who interact on my blog. (Up to my 100 limit.)
    5) Yes, and yes. Without fail. (Sometimes the next day.)
    6) No.
7). Yes, if they do not post for 12 months.
    8) Their interaction on my own blog, just that.
    9) Anything religious or evangelical. Also far-right opinions.
    10) Not important at all.
    11) https://cheryloreglia.blog/ An American lady with a fabulous writing style.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. Thank you, Pete. I could spend entirely too much time here and not focus on other things. It is such a wonderful community, though and it can be hard to resist. I know I have seen Cheryl’s comments from time to time, so I will definitely investigate. Thank you for the suggestion.

    2. OMG! Thank you Pete, I put your blog as one of my favorites! We’ve been out of electricity for four days! My phone and computer have been dead unless I sit in the car and charge! It’s been a little crazy! Hugs, C

  2. I have too many posts, due to JusJoJan so I’m going to put my answers here.

    1) I post 5 times a week, but one is the Thursday Doors Recap, and it’s not really a post I write.

    2) I follow more blogs than I know

    3) I read some blogs every time they post. I read some blogs based on the subject. There is not enough time to read them all every day.

    4) I am continuing to add to the blogs I follow. I meet new bloggers participating in the challenges I join, and if I like them, I follow. This causes my answers to numbers 2 & 3.

    5) I comment on most of the blogs I read. I try to reply to every comment left on my blog.

    6) I only close comments on my blog if I want the reader to comment on someone else’s blog, or if I can’t deal with comments (like when our dog died).

    7) Sometimes, bloggers change their reason for blogging. If I don’t like things after the change, I’ll leave.

    8) I like bloggers who are witty, who share creative content (poetry, photos, stories, etc.) and I like bloggers who post about topics I can relate to.

    9) Turn off – politics or any of the offshoots of the political process in this country.

    10) My blog is like two blogs in one. I have followers who only visit to see the photos. I try to have a nice gallery for each post, but I am trying to reduce the number of photos in each post this year.

    11) this is one of the first blogs I ever followed

    1. Thanks for the thoughtful response, Dan. I think I approach some aspects in blogging similarly. There is not enough time to do everything every day. Also, I appreciate the link. I like finding blogs I may not have discovered on my own.

  3. Here are my answers:

    1. How many times per week do you post? Do you post multiple times a day? If so, how many? I would love to post every day, but I would say I blog 4-5 times a week. I recently took advantage of the “Schedule” option and actually blogged every day for a month that way. I’m never sure I have enough content to do every day.

    2. How many blogs do you follow? WordPress says I follow 284.

    3. Do you read all the blogs you follow every day? If not, how often do you read other blogs? I certainly try to. There are some that I absolutely do read every day – appointment reading in a way.

If I am being completely honest, there are posts that I see that are on a topic I don’t find interesting and skip. Music/Movie/Book blogs I will read if it is something that peaks my interest. There are some poetry blogs I follow where the author is super talented and always has a neat way of expressing things. Then there are blogs that are more personal – the author and I have never met, but I feel as though I know them (and their family) due to the stories they share.

    4. Do you seek out new blogs to follow? I do. I love to find and connect with new blogs. If so, how do you find them? Sometimes I stumble on them through a Google Search and other times through suggestions of other bloggers or a WordPress subject search.

    5. Do you comment on the blogs you read? I do. This is another way that I have become friends with other bloggers. If not, why? Do you respond to all the comments left on your blog? Not all of them. Some of the comments deserve a like (especially when there is nothing more to say) and some comments deserve a response.

    6. Do you ever close comments on a blog you post? If so, why? I may have once on accident. I actually like to read the comments people have.

    7. Do you ever unfollow someone? If so, why? There have been a couple instances where the content shifted to something I just didn’t want to see anymore, so yes. I find myself deleting “people” who follow me more. When I first started blogging, there were 4-5 mortgage blogs that would follow me. I deleted them. There is nothing on my blog that would be of interest to them. Then when I started talking about weight loss all the keto blogs started to follow me, I deleted them.

    8. What content inspires you to follow a blogger? It depends. Many blogs I follow for prompts and ideas to write about. Other blogs are about music, movies, or books. Some of them are authors of poetry or working on their own books. Then there are the ones that I stumble on because of a common topic. If it is something that interests me, I tend to give a follow.

    9. What content turns you off from following someone? The blogs I follow have a lot of diversity. I don’t always agree with the posts or their views, but it takes something that rubs me the wrong way for me to really say, “That’s enough!” I believe everyone has a right to an opinion or a belief.

    10. How important is it to you that you add a photo to every post? I guess I feel it is important, as I tend to add a lot to mine. Many aren’t necessary, but I feel that sometimes they help to illustrate a point, further a description or help the change of topic.

    11. Leave me a link for one blogger (other than yourself) that you think I should check out. Max’s Power Pop Blog is one of the first blogs I started following. We share many of the same interests. https://powerpop.blog/

  4. I answered your questions on my blog today. I hope the pingback worked. I have a somewhat dubious track record with them. Thanks for asking the questions. Good food for thought.

    2. I really enjoyed this post, Maggie, which I found through Ally Bean. I’m a fairly new blogger, and you identified questions I’ve had, but never thought to simply ask. I was very interested in Ally Bean’s answers, and have enjoyed reading through other comments here as well. Great info for a new blogger!

        1. Oh, how nice of you – and how weird! I think I need to do some work on my site. I’d set it up as a trial run – one of those “I’m going to try this blogging thing, just for fun” type things. I found I loved it, but then life became busy. And… I haven’t taken the time to go back and make changes. I’ll link to it here. So sorry for the hassle.

          1. No hassle at all. I always think it respectful to visit those that take the time to comment here. I thought there must be a glitch. Just make sure you update your Gravatar with the correct URL or others might think you a spammers. Now I am off to check out your blog.

  5. A good survey Maggie. I think I’m very much a spirit-moves-me blogger. I don’t set rigid rules for myself, but I do try to post at least once and usually twice a week. I always answer any comment. If someone takes the time to read and comment on my post, I am grateful for the interaction and try to never let it sit.
I enjoy very much many of my blogging friends and find it a wonderful network of helpful people, and I look forward to our interactions. I follow quite a few blogs, but I don’t have the time to comment on all posts. I think I probably take more time posting than I should because I follow so many darn interesting people!
I dislike negativity and political rantings, I get enough of that elsewhere. If one of my blogging friends is having a rough time, of course I care and comment, but I do not follow the constant whiners, I’m not even sure why they are here and what they expect. I’ve only unfollowed a couple of folks, but I seldom follow the negative blogs in the first place.
I just learned through Ally’s post of THIS survey that I could close comments after a set time, and I’ll seek that out to keep things fresh.
Love your blog, so keep up the good work my friend!

    1. Dorothy, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am amazed at what appears to be a huge chunk of time some people invest in their blog. Kudos to them – I just do not see how they manage.

Closing comments after a period of time does seem to cut down on soam. I rarely get any spam comments these days.

Negative people and negative comments take a toll on me. I am with you – I try to keep them out of my feed.

  6. Wonderful survey Maggie, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your questions. Food for thought in my mind. Rather than answering each individually, I would rather answer via summation.

My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s back in 2016. His battle lasted 4 years. During this time frame, I felt a need to write about this terrible disease and how it affects not only the patient, but also the family. I’ve always been prolific in my personal journaling, but I felt a need to share and so I started my own blog, https://johnny2toes.com.

Currently I follow about 20 blogs. I used to devote a great deal of time to reading every post that came my way, and would leave comments on most. Being retired I’ve got a lot of time on my hands and conversely I’ve got almost no time because my wife and have such full plates. Seems we are busier now than we ever were in our working lives.

One blogger I follow and wish to give a shout out to is Ally Bean. She led me here and I’m grateful to her for that. I’ve found a new blogger to follow.

Thanks again for a great survey.

    1. Thank you for responding. I can only imagine how much you had to contend with and I send uplifting thoughts to you. I already follow Ally, but I agree, she is one of the best. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Your comment got dumped into spam so I apologize it took so long for me to respond.

  7. Interesting questions, Maggie. I usually post around 3-4 times a week, sometimes daily if there’s inspiration out there. I follow 7-8 blogs, plus various e-newsletters, which are essentially blogs. I also will read posts that are reposted on FB from friends of mine, mostly garden bloggers. I normally read the blogs I follow, but don’t always comment. I don’t really seek out blogs, but if I come across an interesting feed, I will take note of it. I try to reply to comments on my blog, but don’t have a large number, more comments on my FB shares.

I’m interested in bloggers who are engaged with the natural world, who are good writers, who share reflective content, and are curious about their place in the world. I like to have at least one photo for each post, but it’s not an absolute requirement.

    1. I read more than I comment, Lisa. It can be hard to keep up if I try to read and engage with every blog I frequent.

I love photos, but sadly, I am out of space here.

  8. What a grand idea! A blogging survey!
    1. I blog once a week and try to post on Wednesday mornings but on rare occasions I miss the mark. Which means I post between 50-55 blogs every year.

    2. I follow and respond to about 40 blogs.

    3. I do not read all the blogs that are posted from the people I follow on a daily basis or I’d be reading and commenting all day, every day. I take several days off a week to write, spend time with family, and work on other projects. I usually read a few when I have a break and spend time considering my comments and responses. Obviously, I miss a lot of post from bloggers who post several times a day.
    4. I do seek out new blogs to follow. Like I just found you because you followed me. I like to try a few posts and see if they interest me.

    5. I almost always comment on the blogs I read. On occasion, there is a blogger who just reads and likes mine but does not comment and I usually do the same unless I’m compelled to respond which happens fairly often. I try and respond to every comment left on my blog. I can be delayed but I eventually get to all of them.

    6. I have never closed comments.

    7. I have unfollowed a few people because they stopped posting or there content was no longer of interest to me.

    8. I like humor, lifestyle, bloggers who tell a good story and somehow interweave it with a life lesson or greater truth. I love well written blogs. And at times I end up connecting with the blogger in the comments and we become friends. I even met one blogger friend from New York when I was visiting my daughter and I so enjoyed our in person visit. She’s amazing.

    9. I don’t like a lot of political anger and constant dumping on the other party. That gets old.

    10. I post a photo almost every time. Not sure why? But I believe I read that you attract more readers with a photo.

    11. Of course you should check out Pete at https://beetleypete.com/. He’s one of my favorites. He does series fairly often and they are really good. I also love LA at https://wakinguponthewrongsideof50.com/, but they’re on the tip of the iceberg! I enjoy so many!

Looking forward to following your blog and getting to know you Maggie! Hugs, C

    1. Hi, Cheryl. Your picture is familiar, perhaps from comments on Pete’s blog. He has been an amazing blogging friend and has supported me in this blogging journey since I started. He is indeed one of the best. I found you through him. Your practices seem well thought out. I am interested in how others manage their time here as sometimes I feel I fall short. Thank you for the blog recommendation. I will definitely check it out. Thank you for participating and welcome aboard!

    1. Hello, Erica/Erika. I found your blog delightful and the story behind your name a somewhat familiar one. My birthday is on my birth certificate is different than my ‘real’ birthday. It was not noticed until I was leaving home to join the Air Force. By that time, it was too much to worry about trying to get it changed after all those years so I celebrate twice now! I look forward to getting to know you.

      1. Thank you for the kind, thoughtful comment, Maggie. I love it, celebrating your birthday twice now. I have not posted new content the past while for personal, private reasons. I still visit blogs and write daily. Many bloggers are my friends. I look forward to learning more about you.😀

  10. 1. I post every day. If I post more than once, it’s only two or three times, but that is rare.
    2. Currently, I’m only following about fifteen blogs.
    3. I do not read every blog each day, but I’m trying to read more.
    4. Yes, I am looking for more blogs to follow.
    5. I try to comment on blogs I follow, I always respond to comments on my own blog.
    6. I have never closed comments.
    7. Yes, I have unfollowed, mostly for inactivity or lack of interest.
    8. I enjoy blogs about writing. I like to read self-help and inspiring blogs.
    9. I don’t like complaining or arguing. If I get a sense a writer is arrogant, I’m done.
    10. I do add a lot of pictures because so much of my writing is about my hobby of model railroading. I write about other things as well.
    11. My guess is that you’re already aware of blogs I would suggest.
    Thanks!

    1. Thank you for responding. My dad loved trains, too. I remember a time (maybe sixty years ago) he sold an engine to someone. They gave him a one hundred dollar bill. I had never seen such riches! Wonder what it would be worth today?

You might be surprised concerning what bloggers I may or may not follow. 😊
