Last night we learned a mother, her child, and the family dog were struck by lightening. This family goes to the same school as our 5-year-old granddaughter. Sadly, the mother did not survive.
The electrical storm came up out of nowhere and there was no time for them to get to safety. There was also another person near them that was also struck and a house nearby that caught fire from a lightening strike.
This mom always walked her children home from school to insure their safety. She was waiting for school dismissal when the storm came up.
My granddaughter is so sad to think one of her new friends no longer has a mommy. It is such a sad reality for such young hearts to understand. There will be counselors at her school today to help students and staff come to terms with this devastating loss.
Life can be so harsh sometimes. I cannot imagine what this child has been through and what she witnessed with her mother. I am heartbroken for this family.
Sad news indeed. Prayers for the family.

Yes, my brother’s son was killed when he was only 9 years old in a road accident, I suppose those of us who survive each day can consider ourselves very lucky.

Sadly, Florida being the lightening capital of the world, about 10 people a year lose their life to lightening strikes. It is such a devastating thing for this family and the local community.

I read about it, but didn’t experience the sadness until you wrote about how it as a personal loss. So sad, Maggie.

Wow! I had no idea that Florida has lightning storms like this. It’s so unusual and shocking to be in such a sudden death by lightning. I know I’ve heard of something like this, but not very often. I have 2 young kids (7-year-old and 14-month-old), and I can only imagine. Prayers for the family! β€

I live in North Georgia. Lightening is something we have to be aware of. It can strike out of s cloudless sky. We have an expression “that came out of the blue” for things that happen or are said that were completely unexpected. Tragic event that is gsrd to explain to a five year old..

Thank you. It was such a tragic event. This storm did exactly that – it came out of the blue.
