It’s that time of the week where we all sit down and let our minds take us on a trip while we travel stream of consciousness style. Linda is driving by giving us a word of encouragement to set us on our way. If you are curious what SoCS is all about, check out Linda’s post for all the details. Join the fun while you are there.
Today’s prompt is as follows:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “trip.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!
Covid changed a lot of things and the one I miss the most is a good road trip. There is nothing like having all the time to hit the open road and head toward a destination, or just drive for that matter. Even if Covid does eventually wane to a livable risk, gas prices will certainly keep us at home for the foreseeable future.
The best part of a road trip is having a CD of road tunes. Or better yet a cassette if you really want to do some time travel on the way. Remember those days? Sitting at your comouter, pulling up iTunes, making a playlist, then burning it to a CD? My computer does not even have a CD reader anymore! I even bought printable CDs. My Epson printer had a device to insert the CD into and I could print the song list and a cool cover. I made CD’s for my daughter when she planned a road trip, too.
No, no, no. You can’t just listen to the radio or stream music on Sirrius. One must be in control of the mood. You might need a CD of Songs to Sing or a CD of Songs with a Beat or a CD of Oldies. Do you catch my drift?
There are a few songs that must be on my road trip CD.
- Running Down a Dream
- On the Road Again
- Baby You Can Drive My Car
- Fast Car
- Day Tripper
- Bohemian Rhapsody
- Going Up the Country
- I’ve Been Everywhere
- Life is a Highway
- End of the Line
That might be my first playlist. (If only I still had iTunes and a CD burner!)
But now the bigger question in my mind is if you felt comfortable to strike out on a good old fashioned road trip, what would you choose for your first destination? I am not sure where I would go, but it would definitely be west.
I love listening to my music when I’m driving

It makes the trip go so much faster.

Yes, I connect my Spotify to the car system and then I’m in charge of the playlist.

That’s a great idea!

I also lament the death of the CD drive in my computer because my (very old) little car still has a CD front loader in good working condition. I love your playlist.

It is a shame, isn’t it? I hate streaming for long drives because bridges, weather and mountains constantly interrupt the flow. Glad you enjoyed the music selection!

I’m old fashioned. Until my iPod was stolen I listened to it exclusively. Now it’s still CDs. I’m back to an old CD carrier with about 40 burned CD’s labeled so I know what I am getting. I like your travel list.

CD’s are the best. My car has a five disc CD player in it and I love to stack the CDs and go. Those are some great songs for a good road trip I think.

If I had to go anywhere tomorrow, I would head south to warmer weather. It would be nice to feel summer-like weather, if only for a few days.
“Running Down a Dream” is a favorite of mine. Love Tom Petty and I wish he was still around.

I am a huge Tom Petty fan, too, Mary. There was something special in the way he delivered a song. A warm location always makes a great destination.

I have a radio/CD player in my old car, but never listen to music since I moved to the countryside. I like to drive in the peace and quiet. However, when my wife is in the car, she loves to have some favourite CDs to sing along to.
If I did a long road trip from Beetley, I would drive north along the coast, heading for Northumberland and Scotland. But it would have to be in good weather!
Best wishes, Pete.

If I am driving through the countryside, I like the quiet sometimes, too. Our highways can be so monotonous it almost takes some music to get through the ‘sameness’ of it all. I would love to see Scotland!

I have been many times, but not since 1998. I would like to go there again one day.

I hope you can, Pete.

That is one fabulous play list, Maggie. Huge thanks for bringing us along. Hugs on the wing!

An excellent SoCS Maggie and an interesting play list. Your road trips are, of course, usually a lot longer than ours so you are more in need of entertaining music.

I had not considered that, but you are correct. We have so many long stretching highways.

I love road trips and have taken some memorable ones over the years. I don’t typically listen to music on them, though. I much prefer an interesting podcast to help the miles whoosh by.

I love podcasts and books on CD, but I find they distract me from driving because of the concentration they require.

I remember the days of burning CDs and making fancy covers for them. It was fun but over all too fast. We had streaming radio in our car a couple of times, but, around here, trees block the satellite signal. Thankfully, we still have a CD player in the car. If we could go on a road trip, I’d have to go north. I haven’t seen my family (most of them live in northcentral New York state) in several years, and no one is getting any younger 😉

I hope you can see your family, soon, Marie. These last two plus year’s have been hard on all of us.

I do wonder if my mom wants to see me. Some of my cousins are traveling and she thinks it’s “crazy” of them to do so 😉

It is understandable given all the cautions for anyone beyond a certain age.

For a long time before my daughter moved back here I drove the four hours to Pennsylvania to visit her. I listened to books instead of music, finding they kept me more alert. If I had the chance to go on a road trip I would head north through Vermont back to Quebec. Love that Province.

I get too involved in books. I feel like they take my focus off the road. Vermont and Quebec would certainly be wonderful choices.

Funny because music does that to me.

Thanks for bringing happy memories to mind, Maggie. Our daughter and I skipped our kinda-sorta annual road trip to Pittsburgh in 2020, but we made a short one last summer. She’s usually in charge of music. I miss the CDs, but we build playlists on our phones and connect to Apple CarPlay and we’re back in charge of the music. No streaming services!

Are you using Apple Music to source the songs, Dan? I hope you get to make a road trip this year. I always enjoy those posts.

I got fed up with trying to get music sources to work on my phone several years ago. I connected my phone to my computer and transferred my entire iTunes library to the phone. I’ve augmented that by buying and downloading some songs that I wanted to add, but not too many. I have enough music for a good long ride. Faith has enough for a cross-country trip. She’s better at organizing playlists than I am.

I don’t have music on my phone now but I should look at doing the same thing. I love a good playlist!
