WordPress Bug? Need Your Input

A few days ago I began noticing oddities while using WordPress. I thought it was just me, but several other people noted experiencing one of the same issues.

Here’s what I have noted:

  1. When leaving a comment, I am randomly shifted to a different blog than I was originally replying to. It happened only a few times so I did not pay it much attention. Then I had a fellow blogger leave a comment on my blog. The problem was that the comment was intended for a blog other than mine. (This happened to a very experienced blogger.) In the comments we exchanged about it, a couple of other bloggers piped in and said they had experienced the same thing.
  2. When leaving comments on a blog, I keep getting a warning asking me if I really want to leave without finishing what I was typing. This in the middle of the comment – I was not trying to leave the page. The only resolution is to refresh the page and lose the comment I was typing. (I got smart enough to copy the comment before leaving the page so I would not be required to retype the whole thing.)

Both of these things ‘seem’ to happen while in WordPress Reader. But I cannot say if it only happens in Reader.

If you have experienced this, please leave a comment below. If this is a widespread problem we need details so it can be reported.

Thanks!

      1. Generally. Because Reader sometimes mishandles formatting, esp in dialogue-heavy pieces where paragraph separation is important, I sometimes read externally, but still prefer to reply in the Reader for the sake of continuity. This reply I’m doing within the notification pane, which doesn’t seem to suffer the same issues.

  1. Not happened to me on WordPress,(yet) but I’m getting something similar in Facebook. When adding a comment my screen keeps shifting so I’m looking at about a screen’s-width further down. My half-finished comment is still there with my cursor in it, but I have to scroll up to find it.
Could it be a browser bug? I’m using Chrome.

  2. Hard to pin something like that down, Maggie. At first blush, being redirected to another site all of a sudden, is indicative of a hacked site that has an embedded redirect in it. But if it is going to another known blog, I wouldn’t think it’s a hacking. Most redirects send you to an unknown site, in hopes to get you to click something there.

First, I am self-hosted, so that may cause different issues than yours. I do use the Reader many times, but have found that it doesn’t properly update and reflect where I have liked, or replied to some posts. I find myself having to double-check the original post, to make sure I haven’t missed a reply. Likewise, I have seen the “are you sure you want to leave” on my site when working on something. I haven’t been redirected yet, so that is a plus. Redirects on a site, set off my “Spidey senses”.

I have gone to other blogs, and upon trying to leave a reply, been told I’m not logged into WordPress, or other such problems. I have begun to write it off to WordPress just being too bloated now, and the software is having difficulties with some sites. Gone are the days of simple blogging, replaced with bells and whistles that introduce glitches.

    1. I typed this elsewhere and am pasting here:

Ron, to me this does not behave like a normal redirect. It is occurring in the midst of typing a comment and suddenly without notice, I am whisked away elsewhere. I am suspicious, but not 100% sure, it may be taking users to either the last blog they visited, or to a blog open under the Notifications Comment Pane.

I often receive the message I am not logged into WordPress when trying to comment. I can usually resolve this by scrolling to the bottom of the page to the ‘Wp follow/Notifications box. There is usually a place that says ‘login to wordpress’ and that usually resolves that issue for me. Sites with continuous scrolling make it hard to get to the bottom of the page, however.

  3. I have opened a query in the Support Forums. I will post back if I receive a response. Please continue to leave comments here with details of when and how this occurs. I have posted a link to this post in the Support Forum.

  4. I almost NEVER comment from Reader, although I will scan it to find posts, and I haven’t experienced the problem you describe. I do my comments directly through the original post and no problemo. I hope you can get it all sorted out. How annoying!

      1. You’re welcome! I saw the reader jumping in and out. But I closed the app and restarted it and it was fine. I thought that perhaps it was undergoing an update.

  5. Not long after I started blogging, I stopped using The Reader, changing to emal notifications of posts from those I follow. Most early glitches I experienced came when looking at posts in the reader.
But on a general note, although I have not experienced the issues you mention today, most WP glitches occur when they are ‘messing around’ in the background at WP HQ. Given that they are trying to Beta launch their new system, I suspect that might have something to do with your problems.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  6. This was happening to me too and I thought I’d just hit something and couldn’t switch it off.
It was always when I hit the J or K key and it would bounce me off into another blog or ask me if I wanted to leave before finishing my comment! It seems sorted now. Glad I wasn’t going nuts!

  7. I have had a different comment problem with my being unable to respond in the comment box. It won’t accept my typing input when I have opened the blog from Reader. I have found ways to work around it but it is annoying when it occurs.

  8. Reader is full of bugs, and always has been. I’ve reported numerous bugs in it to them over the years. In many ways I wish WordPress had never built reader – blogging worked perfectly fine with RSS, and RSS is platform agnostic too… It’s part of the reason I’m playing with substack instead of WordPress.

  9. Wow, Maggie, I posted a similar list of problems today and a friend referred me to your post. I haven’t jumped to another site unexpectedly, but I’ve had identical commenting problems within Reader. Thanks for checking out people’s experiences and contacting WP about it!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Rebecca. there are a few people who tirelessly chase these problems down. I have experienced themientical comment problem, but in my case I think it was a latency problem with either my connection or the software. I am not sure which.
