Only 36 Days Until the First Day of Spring

Yesterday was a beautiful weather day. The sun was out and warmed up the house nicely. The temperature reached 62° F (16° C). I spent part of the afternoon cleaning out one of our raised beds. The only survivor of the cold winter months has been the cilantro. One patch of the cilantro had bolted. We can replant in the spring, but it will be too hot in the summer to survive.

Weather predictionsIt is amazing how much one good day can invigorate me. It felt good to be outside in the sun digging in the dirt. I must always temper my enthusiasm because we can always get more severe weather. This coming week our prediction is for rain, rain, and more rain.

This time last year the daffodils were up according to some of my records and photographs, but I have not seen any peeking through the soil yet. We do not have them on our property but they are on display throughout the neighborhood. For now, the camellias are in bloom, but many of the petals are tinged in black from the cold. Usually the squirrels eat many of my camellia flowers so I try not to get too attached to them.

In just two months the hummingbirds will be back. Two months still seems like a long way away. For now I will just enjoy each one of nature’s gifts as they slowly reveal themselves.

      1. We have some small icicles hanging off the roof of the house, but the temperature is set to rise dramatically over the weekend. Then we get the thaw, plus rain! Can’t win. 🙂

  5. Let’s hope someone reminds March to go out like a lamb. The past several years, March has stubbornly hung onto winter up here. Our next 7 still has lows in low teens and single digits and highs barely hitting 30. I envy your optimism, Maggie.

  6. It’s lovely to see something besides snow. Although it’s been so very dry here for so long that I’d be relieved for any sort of moisture. Spring has already sprung. I just hope the summer is not as abnormally hot as last year. LOL, but again, I’m glad it’s not the kind of snow that others get. Hugs on the wing.

    1. Teagan, it is always lovely to see you here. I hope spring is long and the heat of summer is not unbearable. This is my time of year. I have enjoyed winter, but I will not be sad to see spring arrive.

  7. Those new flowers are just so beautiful! We have been enjoying a few lovely days. I think cooler weather is coming soon. But, can’t complain because our winter has been pretty mild. I am tending to the hummingbirds for you! They are well fed and happy. Lol….

    1. It won’t be long until more of the flowers bloom here. Then shortly thereafter we will see the bees and the hummingbirds return.

  8. It was lovely yesterday, in our part of the world, even if unseasonably warm. I did realize that I saw snowdrops on Feb. 23, 2014, looking back through blog posts.

    We are up for dreary days in the week ahead, but spring is indeed, not that far away.

    1. Lisa, I find by doing spring related things, it makes the onset of spring seem closer. I still have two raised gardens to clean out and prepare for planting. I noticed a huge pink camellia flower this morning. This time of year things change quickly. Our seed potatoes are on order, and we are plotting how to layout the gardens this year.

  9. We’ve got about 30 until the daffodils pip but 40 or more til they bloom and about 55 til the tulips rise 🙂 I like the optimism of this post, as we’re deep into snow and cold time. Counting the days really does do me some good — thanks!

    1. It does give us something bright and beautiful to look forward to, Joey. Spring is the most luscious season – everything new and fresh.
