I stumbled upon this photo taken in 1957 of my maternal grandparents’ house. The house was set back off the road with a long driveway leading up to the house. The flowers lining the drive were all planted by my grandmother who had an amazing green thumb. She made it look effortless. There were always straight-backed chairs on the side of the house beside the chimney where people gathered to talk or to string beans or shuck corn. There was an old cast iron hand pump for the well right outside the side door. The front porch was never used except by the grandkids as a place to play.
It is inspiring me to write a story – maybe memoir like or maybe fiction. I thought it might inspire you, too. If you find inspiration, feel free to use the photo, but please link back to this post if you do.
A very American house, Maggie. You would be unlikely to see anything similar in England.
I am sure you will be able to think up a nice story. I thought of something, but it would have to be a serial in many parts. Maybe one day, I have saved the photo just in case.
Best wishes, Pete.

I would love to see what you come up with, Pete. After you feel better, of course.

It ties in with a draft I was working on recently. That was set in America, in the 1870s.

I’d love a long driveway. I bet you can see a lot from upstairs.

I loved being upstairs. The bedrooms were large and expansive with closets galore – cool places to play. The view was pretty cool.

A beautiful photo that is evocative of times gone by. I remember visiting a great aunt who lived in a similar looking house, doing the same things as your grandparents.

Ally, these times are quickly becoming a thing of the past. They were amazing.

Thank you, Mary. I wrote the first part this morning. I enjoy being transported back out of all the current reality.

Even though both sets of my grandparents lived in apartments, I still have VERY special memories of times shared and fun had where they lived. There were playgrounds with views of the New York skyline, a beautiful lake with ducks to feed, walks to the butcher and market thru a little neighborhood in the bronx, etc. Grandparent visits were the best! I always love your childhood photos and memories. Having that idyllic setting and close family ties is just heartwarming.

It looks like a wonderful place to drive up, sit for a while and talk.

It really was, Dan. They had an old portable black and white tv after a while, It only came on to watch the news.
