Song Lyric Sunday – SWAK

Promises, oaths and vows. Those were the words Jim gave us for consideration today. The first song that popped into my head was “The 59th Street Bridge Song” by Simon and Garfunkel. Then my head went to thoughts of love.

When I was a young teen, falling in love was oh, so romantic. I can remember getting angry when my parents referred to my feelings as puppy love because it sure did feel like the real McCoy. Of course, this was all before technology and texting and even phones in some cases. So writing love letters was how courtship was done. Letters were often perfumed, and ‘sealed with a kiss’ –  kissed with actually lipstick covered lips. Too young for lipstick? Then write the letters S.W.A.K. and finish with sealing wax for that romantic feeling. It is an era gone by. I searched Pixabay and Unsplash for SWAK and neither had that tag. I must be getting old.

I have love letters my father wrote to my mother and letters my grandparents exchanged when they were falling in love. What treasures to see them all in their youth, finding the love of their life.

So, I settled on the song “Sealed With a Kiss”, a collaboration between Peter Udell and Gary Geld. The song was first recorded by Four Voices in 1960 but never gained any traction. When recorded and released by Brian Hyland in 1962, it reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the U.K. Singles Chart.

The song was later released by Gary Lewis and the Playboys (1967), Bobby Vinton (1972) and Jason Donovan (1989), all making the charts.

The song tells a story of two people in love that must say goodbye for the summer, promising to see each other in September. Summer meeting and summer parting were a big part of young love in the 1960s.

According to Gary Geld, the song was partially based on a Bach piano finger exercise. These exercises are designed to practice technical piano skills like fingering, arpeggios, and dynamics. Isn’t it amazing what can inspire love?

Sealed With a Kiss
Lyrics from Lyrics Depot

‘Tho we gotta say goodbye for the summer
Darling I promise you this
I’ll send you all my love every day in a letter
Sealed with a kiss

Guess it’s gonna be a cold lonely summer
But I’ll fill the emptiness
I’ll send you all my love every day in a letter
Sealed with a kiss

I’ll see you in the sunlight
I’ll hear your voice everywhere
I’ll run to tenderly hold you
But darling you won’t be there

I don’t wanna say goodbye for the summer
Knowing the love we’ll miss
Oh let us make a pledge to meet in September
And seal it with a kiss

Guess it’s gonna be a cold lonely summer
But I’ll fill the emptiness
I’ll send you all my love every day in a letter
Sealed with a kiss
Sealed with a kiss
Sealed with a kiss
