JusJoJan – And the Award Goes to the Dogs

Some of my favorite actors in movie and television have been dogs. Man’s best friend is often Hollywood’s best friend, too.

My top ten awards (Not in any order because they were all great dogs and amazing actors) go to:

  • Mother Teresa – the Newfoundland co-star in “Must Love Dogs”.
  • Einstein – Catalan Sheepdog starring with Christopher Lloyd in “Back to the Future”.
  • Petey – American Staffordshire Terrier in “The Little Rascals”.
  • Dug – Animated pup in the movie “Up”.
  • Brinkley – Golden Retriever appearing with Tom Hanks in “You’ve Got Mail”.
  • Verdell – Brussels Griffon who put Jack Nicholson through his paces in “As Good as it Gets”
  • The Beast – English Mastiff the junkyard dog who scared the kids in “Sandlot”
  • Dog – a Rough Collie starring with John Wayne in “Big Jake”
  • Old Dan and Little Ann – Redbone Coonhounds in “Where the Red Fern Grows”
  • Neil – Martini loving Saint Bernard ghost in the TV show “Topper”

There are many, many more, but these were my favorites. Do you have a dog actor you would like to nominate?

  1. I loved ‘Hooch’, in the film ‘Turner and Hooch’ with Tom Hanks.
Also ‘Hachi’, in the film ‘Hachi:A Dog’s Tale’, with Richard Gere.
They are both rather sad films, but the dogs are amazing.
    (Hachi made me cry!)
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Lassie. She was my earliest childhood TV memory, though I learned many years later that she was a he in real life. When I was a wee tot, I would cry at the end of the show because Lassie was saying goodbye (until next time.) The sad sounding music didn’t help. What a brave, brave dog, Lassie! I have a cartoon clipping that says, “Lassie, go get help!” and the picture is Lassie on a couch getting psychotherapy. 🙂

    1. Loved Lassie. And Rin Tin Tin. We all knew who Timmy and Lassie were. Such a big part of my youth. One tv station and only in black and white, but Lassie was the dog we all wanted.

      1. In our obedience class the teacher said that was the one breed you didn’t have to teach “stay.” Apparently lying down is their favorite position.
