Song Lyric Sunday – I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

This is the song that popped in my head this morning as I thought about Jim’s challenge of Christmas/Holiday/Snowman. There is something magical about Santa Claus that still appeals to me. I can remember so many times my older siblings would use my naïveté to inquire about Santa to my parents. I did not understand it then. So this song of innocence and discovery is sweet to me. I will add the disclaimer that some versions grate on my nerves.

The song was written by British songwriter Tommie Connor. He also wrote two other non-religious Christmas songs – “The Little Boy That Santa Forgot” and “I’m Sending a Letter to Santa”. According to Wikipedia, he was born in Bloomsbury London, England of parents of Irish descent.

The song was first recorded by Columbia Records in 1952 (at the urging of then recording executive Mitch Miller) by Jimmy Boyd when he was only 13 years old. When the song was first released, it was banned by the Roman Catholic Church in Boston because it mixed kissing and sex with Christmas. The ban was lifted the next year after Jimmy Boyd went to Boston and met with the Archdiocese to explain the song.

It only took three weeks for the song to reach No. 1 on the charts selling two million copies in 10 weeks.

The song has been covered by so many people. It has become one of the most frequently played songs on American radio at Christmas.

”I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”
Lyrics by Genius.com

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Clausi
Underneath the mistletoe last night
She didn’t see me creep
Down the stairs to have a peep
She thought that I was tucked up
In my bedroom fast asleep

Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus
Underneath his beard so snowy white
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If Daddy had only seen
Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
Underneath the mistletoe last night
She didn’t see me creep
Down the stairs to have a peep
She thought that I was tucked up
In my bedroom fast asleep

I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus
Underneath his beard so snowy white
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If Daddy had only seen
Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night

    1. I do not think it is played as often here, but maybe that is because I am listening more to XM stations where I can choose the type of Christmas music I listen to.

  1. I try to avoid Christmas songs whenever possible. But I have a great fondness for ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, especially by Judy Garland. Maybe it’s because it is a sad song, and I have always felt that tinge of sadness around the Christmas period.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. I love most Christmas music. Unlike you, if it gets too moody or sad, I can only listen for a short period. I find too much joy in the holidays. I do like that version by Judy Garland, though, Pete.
