Song Lyric Sunday – Wonderful World

Jim sure has been busy writing this week, but somehow he always finds time to fit Song Lyric Sunday into his schedule. This week the prompts to consider are:

Did/Didn’t/Do/Don’t/Does/Doesn’t

This category opens the door to a wealth of music choices. I settled on one that just makes me happy.

I am a huge fan of Sam Cooke and unfortunately he was lost to this world much too early — at the age of 33, he was shot and killed. The circumstances surrounding his death were called into question by many, but his death was eventually ruled a justifiable homicide. There are some that still believe he was murdered.

Barbara Campbell (wife of Sam Cooke) is credited as songwriter of “Wonderful World”. In reality, ‘Barbara Campbell’ was a pseudonym for songs written by Herb Alpert, Lou Adler and Sam Cooke. Herb Alpert and Lou Adler originally wrote the song, but Sam Cooke added the finishing touches to the lyrics. He was more enamored with the song than Lou and Herb, recording it in 1959. It was released the following year on Keen Records. The song reached #12 on the Top 100 charts.

I looked for a video showing Sam Cooke performing the song. There is no known video footage showing him performing the song. In 1986, ABKCO president Allen Klein offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who could provide said footage.

Herman’s Hermits recorded this song In 1965 and it reached number 4 on charts. It was also featured in a Levi’s commercial in 1985.

Sam Cooke’s recording had a resurgence of interest when it was featured in the 1978 film Animal House. As a result, the song was re-released in 1986.

My favorite memory about this song was from the movie 1985 movie “Witness” featuring Harrison Ford singing and dancing along with the song. This version of the song was recorded by Greg Chapman.

Lyrics from azlyrics.com

Don’t know much about history
Don’t know much biology
Don’t know much about a science book
Don’t know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me, too
What a wonderful world this would be

Don’t know much about geography
Don’t know much trigonometry
Don’t know much about algebra
Don’t know what a slide rule is for

But I do know one and one is two
And if this one could be with you
What a wonderful world this would be

Now, I don’t claim to be an A student
But I’m trying to be
For maybe by being an A student, baby
I can win your love for me

Don’t know much about history
Don’t know much biology
Don’t know much about a science book
Don’t know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me, too
What a wonderful world this would be

La ta ta ta ta ta ta (History)
Hmm-mm-mm (Biology)
La ta ta ta ta ta ta (Science book)
Hmm-mm-mm (French I took)

Yeah, but I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me, too
What a wonderful world this would be
