WT: Social – The Waiting List

Have you heard that Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales is offering an alternative to Facebook and Twitter? Can you imagine an ‘ad-free’ social network?

The idea is that it would be self-policed, similar to Reddit with the ability to vote on the content. I know ‘zero’ about Reddit so I do not know.

You can get on a waiting list to join for free, or you can pay $12.99 a month to bypass the waiting list. There is a belief people will financially support a network that is donation-funded rather than supported by ads. Membership just crossed the 100,000 member threshold and the waiting list is over 64,000 for free access.

It sounds so good on the surface, but if we look at how many people use Wikipedia for example, I wonder how many of those people respond and donate when asked? My husband responds with a donation every year but I do not.

Also, hacking and manipulation has become so prevalent in social media, I wonder if there is truly a way to recover. Yesterday hubby read an article about how FB accessed users’ iPhone camera simple by scrolling through content. Remember how Steve Jobs always kept tape on his camera?

There are already alternatives to Facebook and Twitter and some have already disappeared into oblivion. Is there room for another? Apparently there will always be room for another.

Because I believe everything I hear on TV, we would be shocked at how many footprints we leave on social media every day. I am not ready to plunge into deeper, darker, murkier waters. I think I am quite happy spending most of my time here in Blog Land.

It is not lost on me that Jimmy Wales is advertising WT:Social on Twitter.

How many social media networks do you participate in?

SoCS – Dream a Little Dream

While trying to stay warm, Linda has suggested this as our SoCS topic this week.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “dream.” Use it as a noun or a verb; use any way you’d like. Enjoy!

This topic has unleashed a plethora of thoughts about dreams and dreaming. This is going to be the most stream of consciousness writing I have ever done for Stream of Consciousness Saturday.

The first topic to come up was The Mamas and The Papas and the song “Dream a Little Dream”. The song is so rich in harmony you could describe it as dreamy. (See what I did there?)

From there I am jumping to “Dreamboat Annie” by the group heart. Now the train has traveled on to The Everly Brothers and the song “All I Have To Do Is Dream”. What is with all the music references? This isn’t Song Lyric Sunday for crying out loud.

Speaking of crying out loud, have you ever cried out in your sleep from a dream or a nightmare? I was told I yelled something out in my sleep during the retreat. I do not know what or why.

Thinking about the retreat, we all left with steps to work on to get us close to achieving a dream we held for ourselves. I suppose everyone has a dream, but does everyone have a dream realized? I am working toward my dream every day. I have achieved dream in my life. One was moving back where I was close to “my mountains”. These mountains are the place where I feel centered and at peace.

Even with the fall color waning, the views are still beautiful, don’t you think?

It is no coincidence the children of immigrant parents brought into this country illegally were called Dreamers. Can you imagine living in a place where dreams seemed impossible?

My mind has now shifted back to the song “Dreamboat Annie” which reminds me that young girls used to call the handsome guy of their dreams dreamboats. Did you ever have a dreamboat?

It is now past my bedtime, but it is officially Saturday here so technically I can post my SoCS post.

SWEET DREAMS EVERYONE.

There is a lot of fun going on over at the SoCS post on Linda’s blog. Why not come and check out the rules and read what everyone has to say about dreams today.
