On this cool and breezy Sunday morning I join the tribe that writes about musical lyrics. It is good to be back.
The challenge this week is to write about songs that feature the words:
Could/Might/Should/Would
The song I chose is by the group I know as The Spinners, but also known as The Motown Spinners and The Detroit Spinners — the name change to signify both their departure from Motown Records and also to differentiate them from an U.K. group also known as The Spinners.
The song was written by duo Melvin and Mervin Steals and was released on The Spinner’s new label Atlantic Records. Lead vocals by Bobby Smith and Phillip Wynne (one of the best falsetto tenors of the 70s) helped this song rise to #1 on the soul charts and #4 on the pop charts.
After their departure from Barry Gordy to Atlantic, The Spinners were a big part of the Philly Soul movement with help from producer Thom Bell. They are one of the few groups whose career spanned from Doo-Wop to Motown to Philly Soul and into the Disco Era.
The Spinners had their first TV appearance on the show Hullabaloo (if you are old enough to remember that one) and the entire group were featured in the movie “The Fish That Saved Pittsburg” which had a very disco feel.
In my research, I saw this song categorized as a male love song about yearning. That’s a new description for me but I like it.
Here they are appearing on another great musical television show, “The Midnight Special”.
Lyrics from AZLyrics.com
Every time I speak your name
That’s funny, you say that you
Are so helpless too
That you don’t know what to do
Each night I pray there will never come a day
When you up and take your love away
Say you feel the same way too
And I wonder what
It is I feel for you
(Could it be I’m falling in love)
With you, baby
(Could it be I’m falling in love)
Woo
(Could it be I’m falling in love)
With you
With you
With you
(With you)
I don’t need all those things that used to bring me joy
You’ve made me such a happy boy
And honey, you’ll always be
The only for me
Meeting you was my destiny
You can be sure I will never let you down
When you need me I’ll be around
And darling you’ll always be
The only for me
Heaven made you specially
(Could it be I’m falling in love)
With you, baby
(Could it be I’m falling in love)
Woo
(Could it be I’m falling in love)
With you
With you
With you
(With you)
And darling you’ll always be
The only for me
Heaven made you specially
(Could it be I’m falling in love)
With you, baby
(Could it be I’m falling in love)
I want to know now, baby
(Could it be I’m falling in love)
With you
With you
With you
(With you)
I walk around with my heart in my hands, hey
I walk the street as long as I can, baby
I used to sing fa fa fa fa
But right now I feel so good, I sing la la la la
Once you get me up, won’t let me down
Just let this feeling carry me on
Skip the beats with my heart girl

Over here, they were known as the Detroit Spinners, and I had most if not all of their hit records, including this one of course.
Nice memories, Maggie. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

I am glad you like it. Music should make us feel something and feeling good is a pretty nice choice.

I remember that show The Midnight Special. They had a lot of good acts on there. This song never grows old. Nice intro by Johnny Rivers, never heard him talk before 🙂

I thought the same thing! I would not have known who he was had it not been superimposed on the screen.

The Spinners were tremendous, and this was a fantastic song. I never missed “The Midnight Special” when I was in high school: it might have been the best music program of all time, and that includes “American Bandstand” and “Soul Train.”

I loved that show, too, John. We really did have some good music shows to choose from, didn’t we?

Oh, I remember this song – good one! I also remember watching Hullabaloo! That one and “Where the Action Is” were both favorite music shows. 🙂
