SoCS – If it was Summer

Linda’s prompt today is as follows:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “shade.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

If it was summer, I would be sitting under a shade tree somewhere, resting on my laurels. I have been quite busy and today would be a good day to rest.

Last night I hit my 50,000 words on NaNoWriMo. I can honestly say I am glad it is over. This year was a challenge for me. My story took some dark turns I did not see coming. I ended up finishing what may be the worst thing I have ever written. I do not think it will ever see the light of day. It is one of those pieces of writing you would feel compelled to give a bad review and I am not throwing shade!

What NaNo did for me was get me ready for what I really want to write. I have flushed the garbage down the toilet and will start work on the book I am anxious to start.

Thanksgiving started on a stressful note with some family members in the hospital. I had my feelings hurt and spent a good part of the day in a funk, but managed to think my way through it and had a really nice dinner with our daughter’s family. It is all perspective and I am thankful I managed to get out of the negative space and enjoy the day.

Yesterday, we drove up to the mountains, picked up our great-niece and took her with us to pick out our Christmas tree. She had a great time tromping through the hills looking for the perfect tree. We picked a 10’ ft tree. It is currently in the stand in water, but no decorations yet. That will probably happen slowly over the weekend.

I also put the finishing touches on my Patreon page and will publish and formally announce it after the first of the year. I also finished my Facebook page, too. All in preparation for January. I wanted to have a clear schedule in December to just enjoy the family and the holidays and I think I have been successful.

My grandson has a birthday this week and we will try to drive over and drop off his present. It falls in the middle of the week, so it will be a quick visit.

This coming weekend I am attending another jewelry-making workshop. I am looking forward to just being in the studio where I think of nothing but the task at hand.

Enjoy this last day of November. This year is speeding by!

Turkey Tales

Coming on Thanksgiving I am grateful for the many wonderful holidays I have to remember. These memories often have a funny story or two.

In a prior marriage, my mother-in-law came for Thanksgiving. I was preparing the bird for stuffing. She had already let me know how foolish I was on a few things around the kitchen so the day was less than perfect.

As I had the bird ready and was about to load the first spoonful of stuffing inside the cavity, she shrieked. “You aren’t going to leave the lungs in there are you?”

Well, I did not know there were lungs so yes I was. I have no shame. Needless to say, this forever changed my relationship with poultry.

Then there was the Thanksgiving we had a power outage. The turkey was half cooked. When the power did not come back on, my dad decided to cut the turkey in half and cook it on the grill. Needless to say that had a disastrous end. I don’t remember what we ended up eating that year but it was not turkey!

There was also another Thanksgiving at my Dad’s. The table was set, the side dishes were on the table and everyone was seated. My step-mom walked into the dining room carrying a big beautifully browned turkey. Just as she started to set the platter down she turned around and took it back to the kitchen. It seems she saw the paper bag with the giblets still inside poking out the back of the turkey. At least it was nicely browned as well!

Throughout the years, we have had laughs about our turkey fiascos. They are all part of the memory threads that make up my life. And for that, I am thankful.

Do you have a turkey story to share?
