SoCS – Did You Say Ice Cream?

Welcome back, Linda. Dan managed to keep us in line during your absence.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “-tast-.” Find a word that contains “tast” and use it in your post. Enjoy!

The first thing that came to mind was Tastee-Freez. You know, that soft-serve ice cream place.

Where I grew up we had a soft serve ice cream place, but it was a Dairy King. Yes, King. I am not sure if it was part of a southern chain or a standalone place that just chose the same name.

For us, it was a hangout place but only if we could get into town.

You know there is a big question about who really invented soft-serve ice cream. I read a little about it and honestly, it makes me never want to eat it again.

I would not miss soft serve if I never had it again, but I could not do without real ice cream. That would be a catastrophe.

Check out all the rules on Linda’s blog. Then check the comments to read all the other SoCS posts for today.

    1. Thank you for the recipe, Pete. That looks and sounds delicious. My favorite flavor of ice cream is vanilla, but I love coconut, too. Coconut is my favorite flavor in everything — Cake, candy, pie. I love it all. My sister loved butter pecan. I do like pistachio occasionally…

  1. Nicely done, Maggie. We had Dairy Delight and Tastey Freez. I like any ice cream, but our local soft serve place makes their own flavors, including pistachio and coconut. In case Pete ever lands here.

  2. I used to love this type of ice cream when a little girl. Oh! The delight of mum being flush ( unusual as we were a large family) sending us out to buy an ice-cream from the Tonybell ice cream van . 💜💜

    1. We had an ice cream truck in some of the places we lived. Our favorite treat was always either a ‘push-up’ or a ‘creamsicle’.

  3. Did you mean ‘King’? I grew up in New England and the big chain was ‘Dairy Queen’, and that was before the ERA. But ‘soft ice cream’ (or, whatever it really is), why, I almost ate your picture. That’s how much I like it. Nowadays, a rare McDonalds cone will satisfy my craving. 😉

    1. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I love soft serve. Especially a dipped cone. My parents always went to McDonald’s on date night for ice cream. He a hot fudge sundae, she a caramel sundae.

  4. We had both Dairy King and Dairy Queen restaurants growing up. All the Dairy Kings are gone. Now my guilty pleasure is Mr. Softee soft serve. I will never read how it is made so as not to ruin the joy. Lol. Chocolate soft serve with cherry dip is my favorite. So tasty!

    1. You would have loved the Winky Bar from Biltmore dairy. Cherry ice cream covered in a chocolate dip. Unfortunately, they no longer make it, but they do have a similar sundae!

  5. I’m not so taken with soft-serve after working in a DQ while in high school. I like real ice cream, but could live without it for the rest of my life. Now if we were talking cake or pie…

    1. Ice cream is my goto snack. I can imagine after working at the DQ it might put you off. I do love a good pastry, too, just not as often.

  6. Tastee-Freez and Dairy Queen were both here competing for business as a kid. Now it is the rare DQ that still exists. I prefer the “hard stuff.” I loved chocolate anything. Now that it is off the table, I do without. Great use of the prompt.

  7. I remember Tastee-Freez! I’ve never heard of Dairy King – we have Dairy Queens here. I know that white creamy soft-serve stuff is awful for us…I still get a cone once every decade to remind myself why I shouldn’t get one. Real ice cream is delicious.

    1. The original formulas are not bad, it is just that materials must be precisely stored and refrigerated. Some of the newer ‘versions’ I question. Those restaurants that have the self-serve machines? I will pass.

      1. Oh, my, I bet…that makes me wonder about the ones that are on beach resorts, free for all to enjoy whenever they want!? Eww…I’ll pass on those now, thank you for the tip.

  8. I love ice cream, gelato, custard, spumoni, sorbet — all of it! It’s my thing. Dreamsicles and Skinny Cows are important, too, because CALORIES — but I will walk more, swim more, climb more for more ice cream 🙂
