Day 271
Had a nice walk this morning. We encountered this guy just hanging out by a little slice of sunlight. We have not seen much of the bunnies at our place of late. Nice to see them out and about. He did not hang out after we crept a little closer.
When we came in from the walk, hubby noticed a bunch of sticks in the grill of his truck. Upon further inspection he discovered a pair of Carolina Wrens spent the day yesterday building a nest. These little birds are tireless and relentless in searching for nesting sites. Thankfully there were no eggs, so the nest was removed. I am glad he noticed it or the end result could have been much worse.
I enjoyed a bowl of oatmeal with fresh peaches for breakfast. I love fresh peaches, but not so much canned peaches. I heard a speaker years ago relate a story from his tour of a peach cannery near Atlanta. I will spare you the details, but I refrain from eating canned peaches. Tonight I will make a fresh peach cobbler before the peaches get too ripe.
Some of my tiny new cucumbers suddenly turned yellow on the vine. I suspected too much rain or possibly nutrients, but upon further research, it looks like it could be pollination failure. I was shocked to read that a number of people hand-pollinate their vegetables when there is a lack of pollinators. Does that frighten anyone but me? The majority of our flowers have long ceased blooming. Now I am wondering if I need to bring in some baskets of flowers just to attract bees again. Today I will go out and remove the little guys off the vine. Luckily, we still have a few that look good.
The green colors are so dominant that the cucumber does not show yellow in my phone pic, but they clearly are. Now, looking at the photo, it looks like there might be some insects involved, too.
We try so hard to have pollinator-friendly plants. We don’t seem to have any pollen bearing flowering plants that bloom in this summer heat. If you have any ideas, I am ready to listen!
This evening we went back out so hubby could test drive some trucks. Boy, oh, boy, have trucks changed!

I so love seeing the bees on my flowers. It appears to me, and i am strictly a novice, that the bees and the humming birds like the same plants. At least they seem to coexist with each other.
Good luck on your truck hunt. I bought my Flex because I need a Home Depot care. You know, sometimes a woman just needs to go to Home Depot.

Yes, I make frequent trips to the home improvement stores as well.

That is exactly why this was such a shock. I had no plan to buy. I was supposedly just test driving a car I had admired for two years.

I think all the bees,were on my rose bushes this morning! I had to give up trimming for fear of being stung. Sorry…..will give them directions to NC!

I was at one of the garden centers by the grocery store Thursday evening after gym. One of the most beautiful butterflies I have ever seen was pulse dancing into and out of a mediocre plant. I pointed and tried to bring it to the cashier’s attention but she was with another customer.

Good luck with the garden. I think I better settle on a new car before your hubs buys a new truck. I know they’ve changed a lot, and I probably shouldn’t look.

Thanks, Dan. I am hopeful we can get the garden back on track. It was doing so well. Hubby drove the new Ford Ranger and also the Toyota Tacoma. Both 4×4 crew cab. No decision yet.

Since I had the misfortune of living in Georgia for seven long, hot years, I feel the need to report that when I got south on my vacation, my mouth was watering for fresh peaches, and that my first purchase was, in fact, fresh peaches. Which I ate like the animal I am, outside and with lots of slurping and guttural noises.
From the farmer’s market I frequented when I lived there, I purchased fresh peaches in season and canned peaches when not. Before we left, I purchased a case of the canned. And when I say canned, I mean, canned, in jars, by the picker herself. They were one of the first pantry items in my house and they didn’t last long. Oof. I miss that. (Not enough to go back, but you know.)

Joey, they are a messy but luscious fruit! We love them.
And ‘home canned’ is NOTHING lie commercially canned.
Hopefully you get a few where you live.
