SoCS – Wax Lips

Day 192

Today’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday brought to you by Linda Hill, is an interesting choice:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “lip.” Use it as a word, or find a word with “lip” in it. As always, use any way you’d like. Enjoy!

When I was a kid, Wax Lips were sold unwrapped out of huge glass jars that sat on the counters of 5&10 cent stores and small-town mom and pop stores. I do not recall how much they cost, but it could not have been much for kids to afford them. There were no allowances back in the day — not for us anyway — so our spending money came from returning glass ‘pop bottles’ for the 2 cent deposit.

Wax Lips are still around but used mostly during Halloween and most likely Wax Fangs and Wax Moustaches might be more popular. We bought them just because they were available and silly.

It’s odd to think about candies made from a petroleum byproduct. Referring to Wax Lips as candies might be a stretch. They are made from food-grade paraffin wax, but I can never remember trying to chew them or eat them. The wax would eventually break off in your mouth — they definitely tasted like wax.

According to the American Oil and Gas Historical Society, Wax Lips were originally created by a Buffalo, New York confectioner John W. Glenn. Click the link above to get the scoop on the history — it’s pretty interesting. The company changed hands over the years and Concord Wax LLC is now owned by Tootsie Roll of Canada ULC. There may be different but similar products sold out of China as well.

There was a scene in A Christmas Story when the teacher made Ralphie and his classmates surrender their Wax Fangs. I could not find a clip on YouTube but if you are familiar with the movie, you will probably remember the scene.

If you would like to play along with the SoCS fun, head on over to Linda G. Hill’s blog for all the rules – then jump on in! It’s great fun.

Thanks, Linda!!

  1. I remember wax lips. Did not realize they were still around. I also remember collecting enough soda bottles at 10 cents a pop to return to get $1.85 for an enchilada dinner. That same meal is at least $7.99 these days. Nice memories.
